#HairCareSeries: Not for the Fainthearted

Zulu felt like it was a tug of war. Was she combing her hair or dragging a sack of Nigerian rice? Even clearing a thick forest was easier. Who told her to go natural again? She wondered. That person must have placed her in the darkest part of her heart. “This is torture.” She muttered under her breath.

Okay, caring for African natural hair can be quite difficult as it requires a lot of attention, care and money. Yes o, money is involved too. But, it depends on how you go about it. Some say, it’s not for the fainthearted as there are a lot of challenges. While some actually have a sweet ride all through.

Is it when you have a wash day and it shrinks and you get discouraged as to whether your efforts to have a ‘super long’ natural hair is fruitless or not.  OR, when you comb your hair and ‘more than half’ of it goes on a trip with the comb. Perhaps, you have spent a lot of money on products and you are wondering whether the hair is even growing. Not to worry, you’re not alone.

Understand your Hair Type
As much as you want a very long (I know, okay, super super long) natural hair, understand the type of hair you have. Know the texture of your hair and the products that would be good for it. Accepting the fact that your hair is different from your friend’s is very important.

Good Products
You don’t need to use all your savings to take care of your hair. You can make use of affordable natural products like shea butter and oils. Though, some products are quite expensive, you do not have to buy all. Purchase the ones that are good for your hair and would be effective. Also, do not make the mistake of using a lot of products at the same time. Know what to combine at a time. It’s very important.

Protective Hairstyles
These would help your hair to grow and minimize break outs. It is important to do protective hairstyles regularly. It can be cornrows or twists or just packing your hair nicely.
The Right Comb
Your comb does not have to be the enemy. Use the right comb for your hair. If you have very thick hair, get a wide-tooth comb. You cannot be using a small comb for that kind of hair. And please, comb gently. Yes, that’s what I said. Gently, please.

Patience
Patience is very important. It could take months before you start to see any significant change. You have to stay motivated. Don’t compare your hair growth with that of another and get discouraged. Rather, keep taking the right steps and stay healthy. You can also commit your desire to have a long and healthy hair into God’s hands. Yes, He’s concerned about that too (Philippians 4:6). Put your mind at rest and focus on your other goals.

Keep taking one consistent step at a time.
